Can a roofer work around solar panels? Not on a full tear-off
The first question worth settling is whether your roofer can simply work around the array. For a small repair — a few shingles, a vent boot well away from the panels — sometimes yes. For a full tear-off, no. Your roofer has to strip every square foot down to the deck, inspect the plywood, lay new underlayment, and flash every penetration. The panels sit on mounts bolted through that deck into your rafters. Roofing up to the edge of the array leaves the oldest, most-penetrated section of your roof hidden under the newest one.
There is a warranty dimension too. The upgraded manufacturer warranties roofers sell generally require a complete tear-off installed by a certified contractor, and shingles laid over an existing layer often carry reduced coverage — read the actual warranty document rather than the brochure. A roofer who leaves twenty-year-old shingles under your array has not installed the roof the way the manufacturer describes, and many roofers will tell you plainly they won't warranty it. That isn't the roofer being difficult; it's the paperwork they have to live with.
The upside is that this is close to a once-in-the-life-of-the-system event. Asphalt roofs commonly run twenty to twenty-five years and solar equipment is warrantied on a similar horizon, so a system that went onto a fresh roof will often only need this done once. Either way, it's worth a week of planning.
Book the solar crew first — their calendar sets the roofer's start date
The scheduling mistake to avoid is booking the roofer first and then scrambling to find a solar crew who can get there in time. A solar panel detach and reset is specialty work, the crews who do it book on their own rhythm, and roofing schedules already move with the weather. Lock the solar detach date first, then hand that date to your roofer as the morning they can start. Every other date on the project hangs off those two.
Here's the sequence and the timing we quote. The roofing window in the middle is your roofer's number, not ours — they know their crew and your roof. - Detach day, about a day for most homes: system shut down, panels removed and labelled, rails and mounts off, deck handed to your roofer.

- Reinstall, typically one to two days: new mounts, new flashing, rails, panels, reconnection and commissioning.
- Permits and inspection: many municipalities want an electrical permit and inspection on the reinstall. Confirm early, because it can add days.
- Verification: monitoring back online and production checked against the same months last year.
What happens to your panels while the roof is off
Panels don't just get stacked in the driveway. A good crew photographs the array before anything moves, labels each module by its position, and records serial numbers against that map, because the monitoring platform cares which panel sits where. Modules should come down and be stored on edge in racks or padded stands — never stacked flat on the glass — and kept off bare ground. Rails, mounts, clamps and grounding hardware get bagged and labelled by roof plane so reinstall day isn't a scavenger hunt.
Storage location matters less than storage discipline. A garage bay, a covered trailer, or a sheltered corner under a tarp all work; the enemies are impact, weight on the glass, and standing water sitting in connectors. Ask both contractors for a certificate of insurance before anyone touches the array, agree in writing on who is liable if a module is damaged, and count panels down and back up.
One practical note: your system produces nothing from detach morning until it's recommissioned. Across a July stretch in central Pennsylvania that's a real bite out of a summer bill — another argument for tight scheduling rather than leaving the array in the garage for a month.
New roof, new mounts: why reusing the old holes is the wrong instinct
Putting the mounts back in the same holes feels efficient. It isn't. On most residential arrays the mount isn't sealed by caulk — it's sealed by a flashing, a metal plate that sits on the deck around the mount and tucks up under the shingle course above it, so water runs over the top of it and back onto the roof. Some newer mounts use a compressed butyl seal instead of a flashing plate. Either way, sealant smeared over a bare lag bolt is a backup layer at best, not the barrier — and once a fresh roof is on, the old holes are buried under new material anyway.
So the reinstall starts clean: fresh layout, rafters located, new mounts, and a new seal at every single penetration. Flashings that come off during a detach are usually bent, and older mounting hardware is often corroded. Reusing bent flashing and corroded hardware to save a little on a roof you just paid for is a bad trade. The old deck penetrations get closed properly during the tear-off, while the deck is exposed and your roofer can actually see them.
The tear-off is also when rotten decking turns up. Where an old mount has been leaking quietly for years, the plywood beneath it can be soft, and you will not get a cheaper moment to replace it. Ask your roofer up front how they price deck replacement so a discovery on day two isn't a surprise on the invoice.
Upgrades worth batching into a detach and reset
With rooftop electronics, the part is rarely the expensive half — the access is. Getting a crew up there, panels off, wiring opened and everything back together is most of what a service call involves. During a detach and reset you are already paying for all of that. Anything you were going to do to the array in the next few years gets dramatically cheaper in that window, while every module is on the ground and every mount is in someone's hands.
Micro-inverters — small units mounted on the racking under each panel that convert that panel's DC output to household AC — are the usual candidates, along with DC optimizers. Optimizers are a different animal: SolarEdge and Tigo are the common brands, and rather than making AC at the panel they condition each panel's DC and feed a separate string inverter that does the conversion.
Manufacturer warranties on both commonly run 25 years, though SolarEdge string inverters themselves are typically 12. They generally cover the replacement unit but not the full labor to fit it; some manufacturers reimburse the installer a limited amount for a few years after install, which rarely covers a whole truck roll. So a warranty claim three years from now still usually costs you a service visit. Check your own paperwork for what yours actually says.
- Micro-inverters or optimizers replaced as a batch while every panel is already down and reachable.
- Critter guards: mesh clipped around the array perimeter so squirrels and birds can't nest underneath and chew DC wiring. Homeowners policies vary on rodent damage — check yours.
- DC wiring re-secured up off the roof surface, where sun and heat cycling leave old clips brittle and cable sagging.
- Conduit routes planned now if a battery retrofit is anywhere in your five-year thinking.
- Corroded grounding hardware, cracked junction boxes and brittle connectors swapped while they're at eye level.
Why roofers won't work on a live solar array
Plenty of roofers won't touch a solar array, and they're right not to. An array is a live electrical system, and unlike a circuit you can switch off, the modules themselves produce voltage any time light hits them — a proper shutdown de-energizes the wiring, not the panels. Working around that safely is electrical work, and a roofing contractor's insurance generally doesn't cover it. When a roofer says they'll gladly do your roof but the panels have to be gone before the crew arrives, they're protecting you as much as themselves.
The coordination that works is boring and written down. One shared calendar. Both contractors talking directly to each other instead of relaying through you. A scope that names who closes the old deck penetrations, who supplies the mount flashings, and who is liable for damage to what. Some roofers prefer to set the flashings themselves so the roof warranty stays entirely theirs — a reasonable ask, and one to settle before anyone is on a ladder.

Monitoring, utility and paperwork loose ends after the reset
The reinstall isn't done when the last clamp is torqued. Monitoring has to come back — gateways and communication devices drop their connection during a shutdown, and a replaced router or changed Wi-Fi password is a common reason a system quietly stops reporting. Before the crew leaves, confirm the system is reporting. If you have micro-inverters or optimizers, check that every module appears individually rather than only as a system-level total; a plain string inverter has no per-panel telemetry to show, so there the check is that output matches what the conditions should produce.
If any micro-inverters or optimizers were replaced, their serial numbers changed, and the site's physical layout in the manufacturer's monitoring portal has to be re-mapped to match. Skip that and your app shows panels in the wrong positions or ghost units that never report, which makes diagnosing a real fault later genuinely hard. It's a short job at commissioning and an aggravating one six months on.
A like-for-like reset generally doesn't change your interconnection agreement with the utility. If equipment changes — a different inverter model, a different system size, added storage — your utility may want updated paperwork before the system is authorized to run again, and the specifics differ across PPL, Met-Ed and PECO territory. Your township or borough may also require a permit and electrical inspection on the reinstall. Your pre-project checklist
Work through this before you call anyone — whether you're lining up solar repair in Lancaster County or a reset three counties over. Most of the delay in these projects isn't the labor. It's discovering on day one that nobody can find the original install paperwork, or that the system turns out to be leased and the lease company has opinions about who gets on the roof.
- Locate your original install documents: installer name, panel count, inverter brand and model, and your monitoring login.
- Confirm who owns the system. Leased and PPA systems usually need the lease company's written sign-off before anyone touches the array.
- Get your roofer's start window in writing before you book the solar detach date.
- Decide on equipment upgrades and critter guards up front, not on reinstall morning.
- Confirm who pulls permits, who calls for inspection, and who notifies the utility if equipment changes.
